OFIA - The Home of CLA Grading

Hanford Lumber has been a proud member of the Canadian Lumbermen’s Association (CLA) since 1996. The CLA was founded in 1907 and incorporated in 1931. This organization was founded as an industry group representing all members who manufacture, sell or distribute lumber products to promote their interest and conserve their rights, as well as develop grading rules for lumber which have become the respected foundation for the current NLGA (National Lumber Grades Authority) Grading Rules.

The CLA merged with the Ontario Forest Industries Association (OFIA) in 2009 to become OFIA – The Home of CLA Grading. This current organization continues in the tradition of the CLA of providing members with vision and leadership to all of its members in the promotion of Ontario’s forest products.

The CLA grading arm continues to operate as lumber quality and inspection service and allows mills such as Hanford Lumber grade-stamping privileges in accordance with NLGA rules under the auspices of the CLA and the CLSAB (Canadian Lumber Standards Accreditation Board). It also has Canadian, American and UK standard accreditation and certification privileges. The CLA services further include developing quality business opportunities, providing valuable and practical grading services and running educational programs. Member facilities are inspected and audited monthly for quality control and licensed lumber graders are kept apprised of changes to the NLGA with on-going educational updates.

The Rainforest Alliance

The Rainforest Alliance is a global, non-profit organization dedicated to working with businesses, agriculturalists, foresters and legislators to create a world-wide effort to forge responsible methods of intersecting business and ecological practices in order to create strong forests and healthy communities.

The Rainforest Alliance, in addition to involvement in agriculture and eco-tourism, was one of the founding members of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®), which is the largest and most recognized sustainable forestry standard in the world.

Products and suppliers that carry the FSC® logo and the Rainforest Alliance Certified Seal (the recognizable ‘green frog’ logo) is your assurance that:

  • protect endangered species and forest areas of high conservation value
  • set aside a portion of land as a forest reserve
  • provide workers with fair wages and protect their right to organize
  • follow FSC guidelines that determine how, where and when timber and non-timber forest products are harvested and tacked with chains of custody
  • respect the rights of local communities and indigenous people

Beginning October 01, 2018, the Rainforest Alliance transitioned its certification arm, including staff and clients to their business partner, Nature Economy and People Connected (NEPCon) to continue the certification and audit processes with respect to FSC®.
