Eastern Hemlock Timbers

Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is a slow-growing tree native to eastern Canada and is known for its great size and longevity (some trees take up to 600 years to mature). Eastern Hemlock Timber has been used since Upper Canada was settled for structures, primarily barns, where hemlock’s hardness, durability and large log availability made it a natural choice for this application. Many of these structures are still standing today. Being harder and stronger than spruce or pine, hemlock has found use in many applications where strength is of primary concern. The natural tannins make hemlock an excellent choice for horse fences and stalls.

Hemlock timbers can be used in a wide variety of projects from fencing to decking; from heavy timber framing to lagging and shoring projects; from highway guard rails to sign posts to heavy bridge timbers to and everything in between where its inherent strength over spruce or pine can be relied upon. Hemlock also takes pressure-treatment very well for outdoor projects that rely on durability. as well as strength.
