Red Pine and White Pine Timber

Pine timber is grown in abundance in eastern Ontario and points east. Since pioneer days, it was the natural choice of timber for constructing homes, farm buildings and industrial  facilities. Even today, native pine species have an important place in residential and commercial use.

Red pine (pinus resinosa) and Eastern white pine (pinus strobus ) grow in homogenous stands, either in natural stands or as plantation stands (particularly red pine). They are slow-growing species that can reach diameters up to 60 cm and heights of 25m.

Red pine in particular possesses straight grain and an inherent ability to readily absorb wood preservatives, which makes it ideal for outdoor projects and structural timber. Red pine is not sawn into dimensional lumber as much as white pine is as it is more valuable for making boards, timbers and utility poles. White pine is often used for post and beam homes for its aesthetic qualities, as well as being valuable for making into trim and boards, among other uses.
