Douglas Fir Dimensional Lumber
The strongest of British Columbia’s family of softwoods, douglas fir (pseudotsuga Menziesii) is characterized by strength, stiffness and durability. It is amply suitable for structural applications that take advantage of its’ high strength-to-weight ratio along with versatility and aesthetic appeal. Truly, it is the best species for heavy structural applications just as joists, headers, rafters and glue-laminated timber construction. Coastal and Interior douglas fir is known for its rich pink heartwood and creamy white sapwood adding visual appeal to the overall strength of the species.
The desirable physical properties and wide range of available sizes make douglas fir the material of choice for a broad spectrum of end uses—ranging from post and beam & heavy timber construction to glue-laminated timbers; from porch and gazebo projects to the heaviest of bridge components; from piling and shoring applications and beyond, the structural performance and inherent natural beauty of douglas fir make it a smart choice for many applications.
Features

Rough Sawn Lumber: refers to wood that has been milled directly from the log using a band or circular saw, resulting in a textured surface with visible saw marks, also known as chatter marks. This type of lumber is typically “full-sawn,” meaning it retains dimensions close to its nominal size.
For example, a 2†x 4†x 16’ piece of rough-sawn spruce is close to the true 2†thickness and 4†width. However, under National Lumber Grades Authority (NLGA) regulations, there are allowable tolerances for both full-sawn and standard-sawn lumber, where standard-sawn lumber may be slightly undersized.
Dressed Four Sides (D4S) Lumber: also referred to as surfaced lumber, is rough-sawn timber that has undergone further processing through a thickness planer. This process creates a smooth, uniform finish by removing saw marks and surface imperfections. Standardizes the dimensions of the lumber, ensuring consistency across all pieces.
For example, the same 2†x 4†x 16’ rough-sawn board, once planed on all four sides (D4S – Dressed Four Sides), would become 1 ½â€ x 3 ½â€ x 16’, aligning with industry standard dimensions.
At Hanford Lumber, we offer both rough and dressed options across various species to meet your project specifications. Contact us to discuss your material needs.
