The standard predominant species for construction across North America (spruce, pine, and fir species from all regions of Canada) are grouped as “SPF”. Known for its high strength-to-weight ratio, competitive cost, and universal availability in a wide range of dimensions, SPF is a natural choice for both light framing and heavy timber construction, as well as a wide range of applications in between.
Overall, SPF has a vast range of applications from general construction, framing, packaging, shoring, and earthwork applications, to pressure-treating timbers for commercial projects. SPF is the workhorse of general applications, and grading under the National Lumber Grades Authority rules assure consistent quality regardless of the application.
